Biography:

I joined the Navy in March of 1969 to avoid being drafted and sent to Vietnam. I chose Navy because Dad was a Navy Radioman during Korea, and my grandfather was a Seabee during WW2. Boot camp was at RTC San Diego where I was asked to volunteer for Navy K9 Corps. After boot camp I went to training at NAB Coronado where with classes such as command phrases in Vietnamese and how to disarm a boobytrap it became obvious, I was headed Vietnam. K9 training was at Lackland AFB from July of 1969 to September 1969. I reported to the Navy Kennel in Danang in October 1969. I was there until late May or early June 1970 when I volunteered for Project Waterdog. I was one of the original four handlers in the project. We met our dogs and the Air Force trainers on the project in Saigon and went from there to Cam Ranh Bay to train. After training we went to Nam Can Solid Anchor Base to help with security of sea float/solid anchor. Our job was to keep swimmers from attaching mines to the barges. We returned to Cam Ranh in late September or early October of 1970. I transferred out in October 1970.
