Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael J. Brodsky, 33, of Tamarac, Fla., died July 21 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained July 7 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, from an IED blast. His dog, Jackson, was not injured.

Michael J. Brodsky was assigned to Navy Region Southwest Security Detachment, San Diego. Late on July 7 Brodsky was on patrol in Afghanistan when his unit started taking fire. He put his dog Jackson safely in a truck, as he was trained to do, and then returned to the firefight. On his way back he stepped on a mine.

In critical condition and unresponsive, Brodsky was flown to Germany. Over the next two weeks, doctors fought to save him. His parents, Steven and Debra, and his brother Corey were in Germany with him when he succumbed to his injuries on July 21.

Brodsky had joined the U.S. Navy the day after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He served overseas in Japan and Bahrain prior to his deployment to Afghanistan.
In addition to his parents and brother, he is survived by his daughter, Natalia. The family scheduled a private ceremony at their residence in South Carolina.
