David A. Lucero, 80, Alamosa, Colorado —

 

Alamosa resident David A. Lucero, 80, passed away January 9, 2013 at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. David was born on September 25, 1932 in Antonito, Colorado the son of Jenaro Lucero and Delia Sanchez Lucero.

 

He was a retired Captain from the U.S. Marine Corps, and a Veteran of the Korean Conflict and served two tours in the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of the Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Good Conduct Ribbon, Bronze Star with Combat V, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal and the National Defense medal with one star.

 

Captain Lucero was the commanding office of the USMC War Dog Units in Vietnam from March of 1970 through June of 1971.  In addition to commanding the Scout, and Sentry dog units he was also Director of the Mine and Booby Trap Detection Program.

 

David was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed playing poker, racquet ball; he was an avid car collector and sports fan of boxing and football. He loved the time he spent with all his family and friends, especially his guys at the Car Care Center.

 

Survivors include his wife Dolores Lucero of Alamosa, CO; daughters Donna (Vince) Segura of Alamosa, CO; Debbie (Jim) Creek M.D. of Imperial, CA; LtCol Denise Lucero USMC, Retired of North Beach, MD; sons David (Laura) Lucero of Woody Creek, CO; Dominic Lucero of Alamosa, CO; grandchildren GySgt Vincent Segura, USMC of Camp Pendleton, CA; Maria Segura Lujan of Roswell, NM; Sage Ann Lucero and Carly Lucero both of Woody Creek, CO; Amanda Parsons of Denver, CO; Winona Kartyte of San Diego, CA; he is also survived by five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

David was preceded in death by his parents Jenaro and Delia Lucero and one brother MGySgt Jenaro Lucero Jr., USMC, Retired.

 

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the Romero Funeral Chapel in Alamosa. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Antonito. Cremation will follow and interment will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013, from 10:00 AM to Service time at Romero Funeral Home in Alamosa who is in care of the arrangements.
