On post with my first sentry dog "Thunder". He would carry your helmet or a slap flare for you.
Biography:
I enlisted in the USAF in 1970 after high school. I did my basic training, SP school, Patrol Dog school & AZR combat school all at Lackland, Medina & Bullis. I traded assignments with one of my classmates (Minot AFB) for his orders to Tan Son Nhut AB in Saigon but after one day there, several of us were re-assigned to Cam Ranh Bay AB with the 483rd SPS/K-9. During the time I was at CRB, the main bomb dump was blown up by sappers. In June of 1972 I DEROS'd and was then sent to Fairchild AFB outside of Spokane WA with the 92nd SPS/K-9. While stationed there I was deployed on a 6 month Bullet Shot TDY to Anderson AFB, Guam for the Christmas bombing war in 1972. In 1973, I was sent to one of the first bomb dog schools back at Lackland. I was discharged from active duty in August of 1974 and returned to Arizona. I then Joined the 161st SPS with the Arizona ANG in Phoenix at Sky Harbor International Airport. I left the ANG in 1981 when I became an Arizona Highway Patrolman. I retired from AZ DPS in January, 2015 after 33 years as a state police officer, the last 25 years of which I spent as a detective investigating vehicle thefts. I've been married for 26 years and we have two boys.
