Dusty 62m6 Off Leash Training,Early 1969
Biography:
Trained at Scout Dog School, Ft. Benning, GA with Dusty 62M6, from July 8, to September 27, 1968. Trained two more weeks with Dusty 62M6 at Bien Hoa, Vietnam School. I was then assigned to 49th Scout Dog Platoon, at 199th LT. Infantry Brigade, Long Binh, Vietnam. Note: I was on a combat mission with Dusty 62M6 northwest of Dinh Quan, from July 13 to July 23, 1969, working with Company C, 4th Battalion , 12th Infantry. Dusty found the largest cache of enemy supplies and equipment while the 199th was in Vietnam. It totaled 34 tons. Note: I was on another combat mission in late May of 1969 with Scout Dog Handler Clarence Creaghead, when on a night ambush on May 21, Clarence stepped on a mine. He nor his dog survived. Note: Sadly Dusty 62M6 was transferred to the 58th Scout Dogs, with 101st Airborne, at Camp Evans, and was KIA on April 27, 1971. Note: On September 30, 2017, I was flown up to Washington, DC by Blue Ridge Honor Flight, with 87 WWII Vets, 18 Korean War Vets, and 14 Vietnam Vets and toured all war monuments, including the Vietnam Wall. I was able to find Clarence Creaghead's name on the Wall. What an honor to know these men are not forgotten. Now we need one there for the 4,000 service dogs that did not come back home. SGT.
