Tompkins, 67 years of age, of Nancy, Kentucky, departed this life on Saturday,
January 30th, 2016 at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville,
Tennessee.
Steven was born in
Vinnie, Kentucky on September 17th, 1948, son of the late Charles Edward and
Sylvia Mae Lafavers Tompkins. He married Jane Roy on April 6th, 1968, in Ingle,
Kentucky. Steven entered into the United States Army five days after their
marriage and served his country in the Vietnam War as a dog handler assigned to
the 58th Infantry Platoon Scout Dogs (Camp Evans), earning the Purple Heart for
his service. He worked construction and enjoyed farming. Steven loved spending
time with his grandchildren. He was of the Baptist faith.
Steven was survived by
his loving wife of forty-seven years, Jane Roy Tompkins; two daughters, Amy
(and Troy) Leaver of Castalian Springs, Tennessee and Alisa (and Tim) Elrod of
Clinton, Tennessee; two brothers, Thomas (and Nancy) Tompkins of Columbia and
David (and Sheila) Tompkins of Somerset, Kentucky; three sisters, Judith (and
R.D.) Floyd of Nancy, Kentucky and Charlotte (and Dean) Prather and Janice
Watson, both of Somerset, Kentucky; his mother-in-law, Vineta Roy of Somerset,
Kentucky; four sister-in-laws, Patricia Tompkins of Faubush, Kentucky, Kay (and
Jeff) Ross of Somerset, Kentucky, and Linda (and Lindell) Brock and Brenda (and
Gary) Luttrell, both of Nancy, Kentucky; a brother-in-law, David Roy of
Somerset, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Zachary Steven, Sarah, Rachel,
Savannah, Shelby, Emma, Zane, and Sawyer; and a host of nieces, nephews, other
family and friends who mourn his passing.
Steven was preceded in
death by his parents, Charles Edward Tompkins, who departed this life on
September 15th, 2003 and Sylvia Mae Tompkins, who departed this life on June
23rd, 2015; one brother, Charles “Chuck” Tompkins, who departed this life on
August 20th, 2015; and his father-in-law, Fred Ernal Roy, who departed this
life on October 12th, 1979.
Visitations were held
after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016 at the Southern Oaks Funeral
Home in Somerset, Kentucky.
Funeral services were
held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016 in the Chapel of the Southern
Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Ronnie Ford and Bro. Don Taylor officiating.
His pallbearers were:
Jason Scales, Noel Whittle, James Whittle, Dennis Wilson, Gayle Roy, Jerry
Minton, and Jerry Roy.
Burial followed in the
Mill Springs National Cemetery with full Military Honors by the American Legion
Post No#38 Funeral Detail Honor Guard.
