James R. Davis, age 66, of Bayville, New Jersey, passed away on September 18th, 2013 at Community Medical Center, Toms River, surrounded by loved ones. James was born in Lakewood, New Jersey. He resided, except for 8 yrs in Florida, in Bayville.
For four years he served in the United States Marines as a Scout Dog Handler during the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart. Command chronology states that "L/cpl J.R. Davis", 2355075, was WIA in Quang Nam Providence, and received a gun shot wound to his buttocks, on 16 September, 1968.
James was Treasurer for VVA Chapter 200, Ocean County, and volunteered his time on the Color Guard. He was a member of the Military Order Purple Heart Org., Disabled American Veterans, and Vietnam Dog Handler Association (VDHA), and advanced guard member of the Wounded Warrior Project. For many years James served as a Police Officer, most notably Seaside Heights. He was last employed by Dow Jones as a security officer.
Surviving James is his wife of 48 years, Jerilynn Davis, son Master Sergeant James W. Davis and his wife Katharine and grandchildren, Zachary, Alexander J., and Nadia Davis. Also surviving are his siblings, William L. Charles, and Michael Davis.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Riggs Funeral Home, 130 North Rt. 9, Forked River, NJ 08731. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 370 7th Avenue, Suite 1802, New York, New York 10001
