Subject: Death notice

It is with great sorrow that I must let you know of the death of my husband Mike Jones.

Mike served in Vietnam from 1070-1971 and was assigned to the 3rd SPS.  He was a Ranger with the 101st (Screaming Eagles) and a paratrooper.  He handled 2 dogs, Smokey and Cubby, one being lost to the war.

Mike never tired of telling and re-telling of his and his dogs adventures.  He often told how he and his dog(s) would share his meal.  Often, they would be covered in Agent Orange which eventually ended up taking his life.

Mike was a quiet, wonderful soul with a heart of gold.  His children and grandchildren held him in high esteem like I have never seen before anywhere.  His sons were taught many skills by their dad that he had learned.  Mike was a proud warrior.  Even I was caught up in the spirit and would relay stories he had told.

I noticed a new bright star shining over us when he passed.  I look at it nightly and know how blessed we were to have had him.

Now the sweat shirt I wear saying “Wife of a Vietnam Veteran.  Freedom isn’t free.   My Husband paid for it.” really means it more than ever.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Jones
