Ernest Hamilton Childers, Jr.

07/17/1947 – 08/19/2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest (Ernie) Childers, Jr. on August 19, 2020.

There are no words that can express the grief that the Childers family is experiencing.  Cathy, his wife, and the family have asked that this information be passed along to all of his friends.  As you might imagine, this list is extensive.  Ernie never met a stranger as he walked through life.  If you had the opportunity to meet him and experienced his smile and zest for life, you would never forget him!

Ernie was a father, a husband and a friend that was always there to help others many, many times, putting others ahead of himself.  This is the man that we all knew and loved.

His accomplishments are countless.  Ernie excelled and served in leadership positions with the Vietnam Dog Handler Association (VDHA), Vietnam Security Police Association (VSPA), Thailand Dog Handlers (TDH), Old Dawgs & Pups (OD&P) and was a founding father of his beloved Nemo’s War Dog Heroes Memorial Committee (NWDHMC).

Ernie was awarded the well deserved and distinguished 'Warriors Medal of Valor' from the VSPA.

He assisted in providing Military Dog historical artifacts to the USAF Museum, the Security Forces Museum, the Enlisted Heritage Museum and Gunter Annex, Maxwell AFB, Alabama.  He also helped any other organizations that needed information of the dogs of Vietnam and Thailand.  These were his passions and he was tireless in spreading the heritage of Military Dogs worldwide.

Please view his obituary at www.biggersfh.com.

Details of the services and other information can be found on the site.

The Childers family has asked that in lieu of flowers a donation can be made in his name to:

Military Working Dog Team Support Association

          3501 MacCorkle Ave. SE  #326
          Charleston, WV  25304-1419

or electronically at  www.MWDTSA.org/donations

Questions can be e-mailed to info@mwdtsa.org

The family would love to hear from anyone who loved and spent time with Ernie.  Please share those experiences by sending an e-mail to cathychilders@live.com

My friend, you served your country proudly, you were our friend, a leader and just a wonderful man.  Rest peacefully and give Duke our love.  You will forever be in our hearts.
