Obituary:
Herbert "Sonny" P. Reil, 80, of Northampton passed away February 6, 2015 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital with his loving family by his side.
He was born February 20, 1934 in Montague to the late Herbert and Helen (Maziarz) Reil, and had also attended school in Montague.
Sonny met and fell in love with Dorothy Canon; they married September 5, 1959.
He served his country in the United States Air Force, and retired after 20 years of active service, and later went on to work at the Northampton Veterans Administrative Center as a Police Officer for many years.
He was an avid Red Sox, NY Giants and Patriots fan. He was a renowned pitcher in the Lake Pleasant Area where his parents were from. Sonny had an incredible sense of humor and this amazing love for his children whom he was so proud of.
Besides his loving wife Dorothy (Canon), he is survived by his sons; Peter of Ill., Ronald of Truro, Gregory and his wife Pam of Easthampton, Jeremy and his wife Anna of Florence, his daughters; Laurie Pellott and her husband Ted of Easthampton, Dianne Novotney and her husband Chuck of Mars, PA, and Rhonda Gero of Leeds, 13 grandchildren, 4¾ Great- Grandchildren, his daughter-in-law Nancy Reil, his brothers; Kenneth of Montague, Richard "Boo" of Palm Harbor, FL, John of Grafton, his sisters; Helen Barker of Palm Harbor, FL, Karen McCormack of Greenfield, Eileen Archer of Georgia, many nieces and nephews, his dog Missy, and his cat Lola.
Sonny was pre deceased by his son Dennis, his daughter Deborah, and his brothers Louis and Francis.
The funeral will be Thursday, Feb. 12, at 9 a.m. at the Drozdal Funeral Home, 120 Damon Rd., Northampton, followed by a liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church located at 354 Elm St., Northampton. Burial to follow with Military Honors in Spring Grove Cemetery, Northampton.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Drozdal Funeral Home.
